What does God expect of churches?
Jesus expects his disciples to share his gospel. Forgiveness of sin can be found though him. We can be saved if we believe in his death for our sin, and if we repent and follow him. He has commanded us to share this truth with the world. We expect every church member to be involved in sharing this good news. Our Sunday School classes are working to encourage people to bring others to Christ.
Jesus expects his disciples to be a body. Our Sunday School gatherings are organized around people of the same age. They have common life issues and goals. It makes it easier to find a place to belong, which is what God does as he adds a person to the body. “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…” 1 Corinthians 12:13. Sunday School groups work to share life together, support one another, and love one another.
Jesus expects his disciples to obey. Our Sunday School groups teach God’s Word. We teach the Bible. Day by day, God moves us from a sinful lifestyle to a righteous lifestyle. This is what a disciple does. We become more like the master, and more available for him to work through our lives.
